The Month of Ramadam

Medjool dates

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and it’s the month when Muslims all over the world fast. It’s a month for reflection, prayer and community and family and being together is especially important during that time. The fasting starts before sunrise and ends at sunset. Dates are traditionally eaten to break the fast in the evening.

This tradition goes back centuries. Dates and Islam are inextricably linked; both hail from the Arabian Peninsula, where dates have been a staple food for millennia, appreciated and revered for their nutritional value. Dates are also mentioned several times in the Quran, which makes them such an important food in the month of Ramadan.
